KKPoker is delighted to announce Trevor Otterson as a Canada Star winner!
Trevor, aka ‘🃏 MoJoAnna 🃏’ was the overall Canada Star Video Contest winner for a KKPoker sponsorship package worth over $3,000.
The inaugural KKPoker Canada Star event comprises over three paths to earn an exclusive sponsorship package.
Mission Path, Video Contest Path and Freeroll Path.
As voted for by the event contest committee, which included KKPoker Vegas Dream winner Christopher Alcindor, Trevor’s submission scored highest across the three categories of creativity, quality/entertainment and poker elements.
Not only did Trevor display his passion for both online and live poker, but he also demonstrated his important role in the KKPoker Canada community, having attended all editions of KKLIVE across Canada, as well as being runner-up in KKPoker Canada’s Best yearly event. KKPoker discussed the win with Trevor to get his thoughts and to share more about his poker past, present and future!
“IT’S A HUGE HONOR”
Congratulations Trevor, you’re the Canada Star Video Contest winner! What motivated you to enter, and how has winning impacted your poker goals?
“I entered the video contest because I believed my branding of KKPoker at major events and around the world would be well-received, and my creativity in creating the video and poker room in my house. Winning the contest will help me continue pushing to attend more major events across Canada.”
Can you share with us your journey in poker and how you became a part of the KKPoker community?
“I joined the KKPoker community through Trevor Delaney at a local card room and haven’t looked back.”
Share your thoughts on being part of the KK Canada Star team, and how you are planning to use your sponsor package?
“It’s a huge honor to be part of the KKPoker team. Even without the sponsorship, I know the reps well and already feel part of the KKPoker family. I’ll probably use the sponsorship to enter the Main Event at WSOP Calgary in January, as it’s a huge event I love to attend.”
What is your experience playing live poker?
“I’ve played live poker for decades, starting out by renting hotel rooms to play games, then moving on to local tournaments and games for years. It wasn’t until I joined up with KK that I started traveling to larger events, and now I’m a regular. Being the only player in Canada to play in all the KK Live events is something I hope to continue for as long as I can.”
“FIX LEAKS IN YOUR GAME”
What skills do you believe are crucial for beginners to develop in poker?
“The best advice I can give to new and experienced players alike is to fix leaks in your own game first—because that player is always one of the 9 or 10 at the table. Look at your losses, study the hands you played, and always try to learn something. We all take bad beats, but many players chalk every loss up to bad luck when that’s not always the case.”
Do you have any superstitions while playing poker? Can you share your luckiest or most memorable hands?
“I’m more superstitious and ritualistic in preparing for a tournament than once I’m actually playing. I do get that sinking feeling sometimes when a player makes a big all-in call against me. For example, at WSOP Montreal in the Seniors Event, down to the final 16, the chip leader was bullying the table and pushed on my big blind. I was 3rd or 4th in chips and looked down at AA.
“I called, and he flipped KTs. I said, ‘Don’t worry, I always lose to hands like this when I dominate.’
“The flop came 5-6-7 rainbow. He said, ‘Not this time,’ and I felt good—for one card. The turn came a T, and the river a K. That pot would’ve given me a huge chip lead if it held.”
Many new players find poker intimidating. What strategies or routines did you adopt when starting, and did any resources particularly help you?
“Poker is intimidating—and probably always will be. I read, re-read, and studied many books, but the best advice I can give to make the game less intimidating is to play at levels you can afford to lose at. Actually count the money as lost before you enter the game. If you’re not okay with that, play smaller games. Success will follow more easily.”
Outside of poker, what hobbies or activities do you enjoy?
“Outside of poker, I have several hobbies and collections that help me balance my time. One of my biggest passions is banknote collecting. I was actually one of 25 people inducted into the eBay Hall of Fame, as I was a large dealer back in the late ’90s and early 2000s when eBay was still new.”
“POKER IN CANADA IS THRIVING”
How do you balance your professional life with your poker career? Do skills from your job help in poker?
“I’m fortunate enough to be retired now, so I try to balance poker with travel and relaxing with my partner, Belinda.”
Could you describe the poker scene in Canada, especially in your area?
“Poker in Canada is thriving, and a large part of that is thanks to KK and the local reps who promote the game in local rooms. In the Maritimes, it has slowed a bit recently, but we still have a strong group of players devoted to the game.”
Do you have any advice for new players looking to improve or take the next step in their poker journey?
“For newer players, I suggest playing at appropriate limits. A great way to gradually move up and get comfortable with bigger tournaments is to try winning one of the many tickets available to major events, instead of buying in directly. You gain experience at a lower cost, and there’s usually a large percentage of the field winning the same prize—so it’s not as top-heavy.”
